In Case of a Suicide Call:

This is a response  from Kerry Hyatt Bennett, the attorney from ICADV:

“You can definitely breach confidentiality in cases like that when you believe there is a credible eminent threat. I would have someone on another line call law enforcement or 911”

This was in response to the question posing  “a situation when someone call us on our crisis line who is suicidal and we can not get them to connect with a suicide hotline, medical help or any other resource, what are our options?  For example, if we received a call from someone who had a plan and means such as telling us they had a bunch of pills that they were taking at that moment or if the person stops responding to the Crisis Line staff after indicating they planned to kill themselves, Do we have options and are we allowed to call for help for them?”

Now Matters Now is a very valuable resource for people who are dealing with suicidal thoughts on an ongoing basis. The videos are also helpful for those people seeking to develop mindfulness skills in order to deal with trauma, even if they do not have suicidal thoughts. If someone is not in immediate danger and crisis this resource has exercises that can be verbalized over the phone with a caller, or demonstrated to someone visiting in office.
